Kagiso Rabada (GT): Overseas Pace Depth Blocked by a Strong Domestic Attack
Kagiso Rabada is a world-class pace bowler who does not make GT's optimal XII. His WAR per match of 0.13 splits into bowling WAR/M of 0.14 and batting WAR/M of -0.00. Across 192 T20 matches and 4226 career bowling balls, the career body of work is significant.
The exclusion is about overseas slot allocation, not bowling quality. GT's four overseas slots go to Buttler, Banton, Phillips, and Holder. Rabada would need to displace one of them, and his 0.13 WAR/M does not justify dropping a batter who contributes more total value.
Bowling Profile
Rabada's career bowling numbers are strong across all phases. In the PP, 7.9 economy with 94 wickets. In the middle, 7.5 economy with 45 wickets. At the death, 9.5 economy with 114 wickets. He is a three-phase bowler who can operate anywhere in the innings.
The domestic pace duo of Siraj (0.35 WAR/M) and Prasidh Krishna (0.26 WAR/M) outperforms Rabada in the model's recent data window. Siraj's death dot% of 39% and Krishna's PP dot% of 56% both exceed what Rabada offers in those phases.
Rabada's death share of 81% shows he has been used predominantly as a death bowler. His career PP numbers suggest he could be equally effective with the new ball, but GT already have Krishna filling that role at a higher level.
Why He Does Not Make the XI
The math is straightforward. Adding Rabada means dropping an overseas batter. Buttler (0.49 WAR/M) and Phillips (0.37 WAR/M) are clearly more valuable. Banton (0.25 WAR/M) and Holder (0.16 WAR/M) are closer to Rabada's line, but the batting depth they provide outweighs the pace bowling upgrade.
If Rabada replaced Holder, GT would lose their lower-order batting floor and one of their PP bowling options. The net impact would be negative despite Rabada's superior bowling ceiling.
When Rabada Plays
Rabada enters the XI when a domestic pacer is injured or rested, when conditions demand a third frontline pace option, or when GT choose to stack pace for a specific matchup. He is the first-choice overseas replacement if Holder is rested. On bouncy, pace-friendly surfaces, GT could play Rabada alongside Siraj and Krishna for a three-pronged pace attack.
His 253 career T20 wickets and 192 matches of experience mean he is ready to perform from ball one whenever selected.
What This Means for IPL 2026
Rabada's projected WAR/M of 0.13 and xImpact of 23 reflect the model's view that his recent form has dipped below his career peak. GT benefit from having him as a matchup-dependent selection rather than an every-game starter. Like Rashid Khan, Rabada is a luxury reserve who would start for most other IPL teams.
