Pathum Nissanka is arguably Delhi Capitals' most talented batter by raw numbers. His WAR per match of 0.53 is the highest on the roster. His batting WAR of 0.63 is the highest among all DC players. His xImpact of 81 leads the squad. His projected WAR/M of 0.50 for 2026 would make him the single most valuable player in the XII if he were included.

He is not in the optimal XII.

The Overseas Problem

DC's four overseas slots go to Ben Duckett (#3), Tristan Stubbs (#6), Mitchell Starc (bowler), and Dushmantha Chameera (bowler). Nissanka profiles as an Opener #1, the same position Shaw holds. Swapping Nissanka for Shaw would improve the opener position but cost an overseas slot. That slot would need to come from Duckett, Stubbs, Starc, or Chameera, each of whom fills a structural role that no domestic player can replicate.

The math: Nissanka at opener (projected 0.50) minus Shaw at opener (projected 0.35) gives a 0.15 WAR/M gain. But dropping any overseas bowler (Starc at 0.17 or Chameera at 0.10) or any overseas batter (Duckett at 0.29 or Stubbs at 0.31) to accommodate Nissanka reduces the total XI WAR. The model optimizes for the full lineup, not individual player value.

What His Numbers Show

His career T20 SR of 128 across 1958 batting balls is below the pace expected for a modern T20 opener. His PP SR of 124 is 28 points below the 152 average. That is a major red flag. An opener who strikes at 124 in the PP is a liability in the highest-scoring phase.

Against pace in the PP, 131 across 713 balls. Against spin in the PP, 133 across 159 balls. Neither bowling type produces above-average PP scoring from Nissanka.

His death SR of 175 is fine, and his middle-overs numbers are below average at 125. The high WAR comes from volume production and consistency rather than phase-specific dominance.

When He Plays

Nissanka becomes the first replacement if any overseas player misses matches. If Duckett or Stubbs are unavailable, Nissanka slots in at opener and Shaw or Porel adjusts. If a bowler is unavailable, DC may restructure to include Nissanka alongside a domestic bowling replacement. His 0.82 IPL confidence and 911 IPL balls make him a reliable backup with a proven track record.

What This Means for IPL 2026

Nissanka's exclusion from the optimal XII is not a talent judgment. It is a squad construction constraint. He is DC's highest-WAR player sitting on the bench, available as an impact substitute or injury replacement. His projected 0.50 WAR/M means that any match he plays, DC gains significant value. The challenge is finding the right overseas combination that includes him without sacrificing bowling depth.
